Instagram supports third party authentication apps for Android

Instagram now supports third party authentication apps on Android.

The photo sharing app has officially rolled out the product which uses apps like Google's Authenticator or Duo Mobile instead of an SMS text.

To switch it on, users have to go to the hamburger menu on their profile, click settings, scroll to two-factor authentication and either tap "get started" or turn on the app.

The service will then detect whichever app you're using, and it will guide you through the setup process.

While iOS users have haad access to third-party verification for motnhs, Instagram had also already allowed for phone number authentication.

As The Verge notes, SIM card hacing has become a real threat with attackers essentially taking over people's phone numbers to intercept two-factor SMS messages.

From there, they are able to verify account logins and take over - making the third party verification big boost for online security.
