Wizz Air to bring Starlink internet to passengers across its fleet

Wizz Air has announced plans to introduce Starlink internet connectivity across its fleet from 2027.

The decision sees the budget carrier become the first European ultra-low-cost airline to offer the advanced onboard technology to millions of passengers and said the move marks a major step forward for affordable air travel, giving customers access to high-speed internet while flying without having to pay premium airline fares.

The rollout is scheduled to begin in 2027, with Wizz Air planning to equip its new-generation aircraft with Starlink technology to deliver a consistent onboard experience across its network.

The airline believes the partnership will transform the way passengers travel, allowing them to stay connected throughout their journey rather than viewing flying time as a period spent offline.

Ian Malin, Chief Commercial Officer of Wizz Air, said: "Ultra-low-cost travel has always been about making opportunities accessible to more people.

"In 2027, we’re taking that philosophy into the space era.

"Our customers shouldn’t have to choose between affordable fares and reliable internet onboard to stay connected to the people, work, and moments that matter most.

"We’re proud to lead that change by collaborating with Starlink to bring maximum benefit to Wizz Air! Let’s WIZZ!"

For many years, reliable in-flight internet has largely been associated with premium cabins and higher-priced tickets.

Wizz Air said its decision to partner with Starlink reflects a commitment to making advanced technology available to all travellers, regardless of the fare they pay.

Once installed, the system will allow passengers to access high-speed, low-latency internet at cruising altitude, helping them stay in touch with family and friends, work remotely or access entertainment during flights.

Starlink, developed by SpaceX, uses a network of satellites designed to provide internet coverage around the world, including in areas where traditional connectivity can be limited.

Jason Fritch, Vice President of Starlink Enterprise Sales at SpaceX, said: "We’re thrilled to bring Starlink onboard Wizz Air and transform the travel experience for millions of its customers.

"Keeping passengers and crew seamlessly connected at 30,000 feet is exactly what this technology was built to do.

"We look forward to delivering reliable, high-speed internet from departure to arrival."

The announcement comes as airlines increasingly invest in onboard technology to improve the passenger experience and meet growing expectations for constant connectivity.

Wizz Air said the introduction of Starlink will help remove one of the traditional compromises associated with flying, particularly on low-cost airlines.

The carrier added that travel should bring people together rather than disconnect them, with passengers set to benefit from internet access throughout their journeys once the fleet-wide rollout begins in 2027.
