New data from Trainline has highlighted which spots are seeing the biggest uplift in bookings during the first week of the holidays, revealing a trend towards short, engaging trips that combine outdoor adventure with family-friendly attractions.
From sandy beaches to historic castles, steam railways and riverside retreats, the top trending destinations provide a diverse mix for every type of family getaway. Saltburn in North Yorkshire leads the list with passenger bookings up 133%, offering Victorian pier fun, a stretch of sandy beach, and the charming Valley Gardens, complete with a tearoom.
Ilkley, West Yorkshire, is another firm favourite, up 120%, where riverside walks, Ilkley Moor, and the local lido provide the perfect active holiday escape.
Train enthusiasts are flocking to Didcot Parkway in Oxfordshire, which saw a 116% uplift in bookings, thanks to the Didcot Railway Centre. Families can explore historic steam locomotives and join in on interactive heritage experiences, including unlimited rides on 8 August. orecambe in Lancashire (+114%) offers a traditional seaside experience, while Arundel, West Sussex (+113%) combines riverside charm with visits to the iconic Arundel Castle and the Arundel Wetland Centre.
Cornish gem St Erth (+102%) provides a gateway to St Ives and Porthminster Beach, ideal for sun, surf, and a short train ride from the station. Bolton in Greater Manchester (+85%) and Warwick, Warwickshire (+70%) round out the list with museums, family theatre shows, historic streets, and easy access to landmarks like Warwick Castle.
To keep children entertained on the journey, Trainline has partnered with Yoto to launch a free collection of audio Draw Alongs. The programme features 12 guided activities ranging from dream trains to ice cream illustrations, providing affordable, screen-free fun while on board.

Trainline also recommends families check out the Family + Friends Railcard for savings. For £35 per year, up to four adults get a third off fares, while children aged 5–15 can travel for 60% off, making spontaneous summer trips even more accessible.
