Unai Emery 'signs contract extension' at Aston Villa

Unai Emery has signed a contract extension at Aston Villa.

The 52-year-old football manager has led Villa to a Europa Conference League semi-final - when they will face Greek side Olympiacos next month - and they are currently fourth in the Premier League with an eye on achieving Champions League qualification.

Villa have rocketed up the Premier League table since Emery joined from Villarreal in October 2022, and his successful 18-month spell has seen him linked to several other clubs.

But, according to The Athletic, Emery has committed his future to the Midlands outfit by extending his contract as Villa head coach until 2027.

Emery is aiming to lead Villa to their first trophy since 1996 by winning the Conference League.

But before they face Olympiacos, Villa will go nine points clear of fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur if they beat Chelsea on Saturday (27.04.24).

Earlier this week, Emery - who was sacked by Arsenal in November 2019 - emerged as a potential contender for the Bayern Munich job.

Thomas Tuchel is to leave the Allianz Arena at the end of the season, and the German side have also been linked with their former boss Julian Nagelsmann, and ex-Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane.

Germany legend Lothar Matthaus would also love Bayern to appoint Emery.

He told Sky Germany: "I would get Unai Emery from Aston Villa. He's doing a great job there. He has a lot of experience - including internationally - and he has titles to his name with Sevilla, for example.

"He speaks perfect English. He can then learn German, but the players can all speak English anyway, so I don't see any language barrier. Emery would also be someone who would bring in a new wind, he would be a new face in the Bundesliga and That would fit well with Bayern Munich."
