The 28-year-old winger’s career has been blighted by injury, including two ruptured ACLs and she admitted it felt like it had been a long time coming when she “finally” got to play for her country.
Asked how it felt to make her Sweden debut at the age of 24, she told FourFourTwo magazine: “’Finally’. That’s how it felt. The first time I got called up was just before my injury, so I’d been waiting for that moment – I saw all of my pals making their debuts, and I was still waiting.
“When I played my first minutes, it was a massive relief. It brought me lots of happiness.”
Last year, Johanna received the Diamond Ball, the award for the country’s player of the year, and though the honour came as a “big shock”, it was one of the “proudest” moments of her life.
She said: “It was one of the proudest moments in my life.
“As a child, you look at those awards and think ‘One day, one day’.
“My father and I always talked about it, and it wasn’t about if I was going to win it, it was when I was going to win it.
“It’s something that’s been in my mind the whole time, and when I finally won it, it was a big shock. I was so surprised and grateful.
“I was also thinking, ‘OK – everything I’ve been through with the injuries and leaving home at such an early age? It was worth it in the end.’ ”
