Danny Röhl says goodbye to crisis-hit Sheffield Wednesday

Danny Röhl has said goodbye to Sheffield Wednesday.

The 36-year-old, who joined the Championship side as manager in October 2023, leaves by mutual consent and will not be required to pay compensation, allowing him to pursue other roles immediately.

He confirmed his departure after what he called “21 unforgettable months”, as the club faces an ongoing financial crisis and a three-window transfer ban imposed by the EFL.

Röhl is not currently understood to have a new job lined up.

In a statement shared on Instagram, he said: “A very special time is coming to an end and I am incredibly grateful for the experiences we have shared over 21 unforgettable months together. I thank our chairman for his faith and giving me the opportunity to take my first steps as a manager.

“I thank my players for such a successful collaboration, your tireless commitment and for being great humans. I am proud of all of your personal resilience and efforts.

“This summer has been difficult and, in the end, the club and I came to the mutual decision to part ways. I understand the different thoughts and reactions to everything that has been going on during these past few months.

“I take so many special moments away with me that will remain in my heart. We achieved a miracle together and that will always be something truly exceptional. I wish everyone associated with Wednesday my very best. I will never forget you. The Gaffer.”

Sheffield Wednesday also confirmed the German’s exit in a club statement, crediting him with guiding the team to Championship survival and a mid-table finish in the 2024/25 season.

Rohl, who became the youngest manager in the EFL upon his appointment, previously served as assistant at Southampton and Bayern Munich.

Coaches Sascha Lense, Chris Powell, Neil Thompson and Sal Bibbo have also left the club.

Assistant manager Henrik Pedersen, who recently signed a new contract, remains at Hillsborough and is now a frontrunner to succeed Rohl.

Wednesday’s troubles deepened earlier this summer, with reports that the club’s owner, Dejphon Chansiri, is refusing to sell for less than £100 million despite financial difficulties.

According to The Sun, Chansiri owes more than £4 million in football-related debts.

Players reportedly experienced payment delays in May and June.

US businessman Tilman Fertitta, 68 — who owns the NBA’s Houston Rockets and is a known ally of US president Donald Trump — was recently linked with a takeover bid, though no agreement has been reached.

Meanwhile, 30-year-old Callum Paterson, who helped Sheffield Wednesday gain promotion to the Championship in 2023, has left the club to join MK Dons in League Two.
