The pace bowler tumbled to make a boundary stop late on the opening day at The Oval on Thursday (31.07.25) when he landed awkwardly, injuring his left shoulder and exiting the field in a makeshift sling.
An ECB statement issued on Friday (01.08.25) confirmed: “England seamer Chris Woakes will continue to be monitored throughout the remainder of the Rothesay Fifth Test at The Kia Oval, following a left shoulder injury sustained on day one of the match against India.
“At this stage, the injury has ruled him out of any further participation in the Test. A further assessment will be conducted at the conclusion of the series.”
Fellow pace bowler Gus Atkinson had admitted after play concluded on Thursday that it didn't "look great" for his teammate.
He told BBC Sport: "It doesn't look great. I will be surprised if he takes any part in the game.
"It's the last game of the series and when anyone gets injured it's a shame. We're hoping it's not too bad. Whatever it is, he will get full support from everyone."
Chris, 36, is the only England pace bowler to have featured in every Test of the five-match series, and his injury will come as a blow to an already-deleted England side.
Captain Ben Stokes is also missing the Test due to a shoulder injury, while Mark Wood is a long-term absentee from the squad and Olly Stone is only just getting back to fitness following a lay off with a knee injury.
And both Brydon Carse and Jofra Archer were left out at The Oval to allow them to recover from their workload in previous tests.
