The Reds had appeared set to end their title drought under Brendan Rodgers but their hopes were extinguished when captain Steven Gerrard infamously slipped during a 2-0 home defeat to Chelsea late in the season and Skrtel felt the ending was very "harsh" on the club.
The former defender told FourFourTwo magazine: "That one still hurts, particularly because it cost us the title.
"It was doubly sad for Stevie. Being a club legend and having such bad luck, we all felt for him. The title was so close but we had to accept the outcome. That's football. Sometimes it's beautiful, but sometimes it can be very harsh."
Skrtel won the 2012 League Cup with Liverpool – scoring in the final against Cardiff – but regrets that he was unable to lift more silverware during his spell at Anfield.
The Slovakian international said: "Football is a team sport so it should be primarily about the titles and delivering silverware for fans.
"Of course, I would love to have won more trophies, but I'm glad I won at least one. I have only fond memories from that clash. Playing at a packed out Wembley, scoring and lifting the trophy. What a day!
"The 4-0 win at home against Real Madrid in the Champions League knockout stage in March 2009 also stands out."
Skrtel spent over eight years at Liverpool and looks back fondly at his time with the club.
He said: "It's a combination of honour, privilege and fulfilled dreams.
"Playing football from early childhood, I always wanted to play at the top level. So coming to England and experiencing the Premier League in person was a dream come true. To be part of such a huge club makes it all extra special.
"Even the idea of being a team-mate of the likes of Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres, Jamie Carragher or Javier Mascherano seems amazing to me now.
"But at the same time, it was also a great responsibility because Liverpool have fans all over the world and the history is enormous."
