The 20-year-old midfielder is said to have told the Red Devils he wanted to leave Old Trafford on loan this summer folllowing a disappointing start to the season, but according to TEAMtalk, the club have denied his request.
According to the BBC, Manchester United have told Mainoo they value him in their squad, and so want him to stay.
Mainoo has a contract to stay at Manchester United until 2027, though negotiations for an extension have reportedly stalled.
While it is understood Mainoo doesn’t want to permenantly part ways with Manchester United, the midfielder is said to be unhappy with the amount of play time in the Premier League he will receive.
For the Red Devil’s two opening games against Arsenal and Fulham, Mainoo was an unused substitute, with the matches ending in a loss and a draw, resepectively, for Manchester United.
Since then, Mainoo played the full 90 minutes of Manchester United’s English Football League Cup match with League Two's Grimsby Town, though the club ultimately crashed out of the competition after losing on penalties.
Before Manchester United’s defeat to Grimsby on Wednesday (27.08.25), manager Ruben Amorim said he “believes a lot” in Mainoo, but insisted he had to “fight” for his position in midfield with Bruno Fernandes.
He told Sky Sports: “The same as any player in that position. I expect a lot from Kobbie Mainoo.
“People think that sometimes you need to just give, I think it's important for Kobbie to fight for his place.
“I believe a lot in Kobbie, more than everybody thinks. He's playing in one position, he's fighting with Bruno. If they can play together. We need to improve that position and you can see it against Fulham.
“I expect the best from Kobbie, the same as everybody.”
After Manchester United were knocked out of the English Football League Cup, Amorim admitted his side looked “completely lost”.
He said: “I think this is a little bit the limit. I think something has to change.
“I think the team and the players spoke really loud today, so that's it. I think the best team won, the only team that was on the pitch.
“I think it's really clear what they spoke, so let's move on from this day. I think it was clear for everybody what happened today.
“The way we start the game without any intensity, we were completely lost.
“In this moment, we need to focus on the weekend and then we have time to think.”
