Devin Haney has ‘fallen out of love’ with boxing following Ryan Garcia debacle, Eddie Hearn says

Devin Haney has lost his “love of the sport” after his controversial match with Ryan Garcia, promoter Eddie Hearn has said.

The Dream, 26, was defeated by The Flash, 27, by majority decision in April 2024, and Hearn has now said the loss has deeply affected him.

Speaking with Australian Boxing Central, the Matchroom promoter explained: “Devin has changed.

“He’s fallen out of love of the sport of boxing because of what happened with Ryan Garcia and all the other b******* as well.

“So, when Devin started, all he wanted to do was chase greatness. I don’t think he’s like that anymore.”

Hearn added he thinks Haney has become jaded by his Garcia fight, which saw the latter boxer test positive for the performance-enhancing drug (PED) Ostarine, and fans turned on Haney for filing a lawsuit against his opponent in the aftermath.

However, after Garcia tested positive for the substance, the result of the match was changed to a no contest, and the boxer was banned from competing for a year.

Hearn said: “I think it was a rough ride what happened in the Ryan-Garcia fight. It isn’t just what happened to him. It was the people’s responses.

“He became the villain in a fight where he got bashed up by a guy who had performance-enhancing drugs in his system, and that should never have been that way.”

Hearn concluded: “I think it made Devin fall out of love with the sport of boxing. And I think now a big part of Devin is fighting just for money, and that’s when it becomes dangerous because you’re not the same fighter.”

Following his Garcia fight, Haney insisted he wanted to “prove to [himself]” that he is “still a force to be reckoned with”.

He told The Independent: “I want the world to see I’m still a force to be reckoned with, I’m still one of the best fighters in the world, and that fight took nothing out of me. That’s important for me to prove to the world, prove to myself.”

Since then, Haney got back in the ring and defeated Jose Ramirez, 33, via unaninous decision in May.
