Amir Khan says he ‘100 per cent’ could have beaten Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao in his prime

Amir Khan has said he “100 per cent” would have beaten Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao at his peak.

The former light-welterweight world champion, 38, retired in 2022 and insisted he would “never fight again”, but Khan believes the version of himself who defeated Marcos Maidana in 2010 would have been too much for Money, 48, and Pac Man, 46.

When BoxingScene asked Mr. Perfectionist if he could have defeated Mayweather and Pacquiao, he said: “Yeah, 100 per cent.

“And I learned that because they never wanted to fight me. That’s why the fights never happened.”

Khan trained alongside Pacquiao at Freddie Roach’s Wild Card Gym during the early 2010s, and believes the Filipino icon - an eight-division champion - avoided him because of their familiarity.

Mayweather, meanwhile, opted to face the likes of Juan Manuel Marquez, Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez and Maidana during the period Khan was campaigning at welterweight.

Khan pointed to his career-defining win over Maidana as evidence he could have beaten anyone that night.

In that fight, he dropped Maidana in the opening round and survived relentless pressure to earn a unanimous decision by scores of 114-111, 114-111 and 113-112.

He said: “It could’ve been … the thing is, it never happened. But on that night, I would’ve beat all of them. I was always fighting with my heart, I gave my all, and at the peak of my career.

“I was always taking big risks.”

Khan later moved up to middleweight to face Avarez in 2016, leading on one card before being knocked out in the sixth round.

He was stopped again in 2019 by fellow undefeated champion Terence Crawford, who has since become a five-division titleholder.

Khan, who ended his career with a 34-6 (21 KOs), reflected on his legacy.

He said: “My days are over in the sport, and I think it’s about giving other people opportunities and letting them come up. I had a wonderful career, fought the best, won and lost, but I made my name big in the sport.

“These young fighters should take a leaf through my book.”

Khan added he had no regrets from his boxing career, adding he had given his all.

He said: “One thing I’m going to say is I’m not going to regret anything I ever gave to my sport, to boxing, to my career. All the moves I made, all the decisions I made, it was all God’s plan.”
