The 34-year-old Denmark midfielder, who was fitted with an ICD pacemaker after suffering a cardiac arrest in 2021, fell to the ground during his country's friendly match against Ukraine on Sunday (07.06.26) and now the team's doctor has offered an update.
Denmark team doctor Morten Boesen said in a statement on Monday: "I spoke with Christian this morning, and he is doing well. He is with his family and in good spirits.
“The expectation is that he will be discharged soon and can return home.
“We are taking good care of the players and staff and remain in regular contact with them.”
The former Spurs star was able to continue his playing career with Brentford in 2022 thanks to his ICD, while he later spent three years at Manchester United.
He joined Wolfsburg in the summer of 2025 and played 34 games for the German club last season, and collapsed during his 151st Denmark appearance.
After the game, Boesen had explained: "Christian is doing well and walked off the pitch by himself.
"As I see it, the pacemaker responded as it should. He was briefly unconscious, but regained consciousness very quickly, and we were quickly in contact with him.
"He will now undergo further examinations at the hospital to determine what caused the incident."
He added that the national team's medical professional were in "going contact with him and the doctors at the hospital.
He said: "Christian is doing well, and he asked me to send his regards to all the players and tell them that he was OK."
The game over the weekend was called off, and both teams' players and staff stood arm in arm and Denmark coach Brian Riemer spoke.
He later said: ""The most important thing is that Christian is doing well and he is. He has left the field, and he has sent his regards to the players.
"Now it's about us standing together, as you could see that we did in the most dignified way on the field, and of course ensuring that everyone has a shoulder to lean on from here."
