Liverpool put Virgil van Dijk ball in Saints' court

Liverpool are keen to reignite their interest in Virgil van Dijk and are waiting for Southampton to give them permission to swoop.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has been chasing the 25-year-old Netherlands international central defender since the end of last season, but the Anfield club dropped their interest and issued an apology to the Saints when accused of trying to tap up the former Celtic man.

Van Dijk has since remained at St Mary's but their new boss Mauricio Pellegrino confirmed at the end of last week that he is training alone "because he wants to leave", with Liverpool believed to be his preferred destination.

Therefore, the Reds are hopeful that the Saints will opt to offload Van Dijk and pick up a £50million transfer fee to reinvest back into their squad as opposed to keeping an unhappy player on board who will not be selected.

But rather than try to force the issue, Reds officials are waiting on the Saints to make a firm decision and will be ready if they are given any encouragement to make a bid.
