United plan Wayne Rooney tribute

Wayne Rooney will receive a special tribute when he returns to Old Trafford this Sunday with Everton.

Manchester United chiefs want to mark the occasion with a presentation and the home fans will also display a new banner, in recognition of their all-time leading goalscorer, who departed this summer on a free transfer after 13 years service to rejoin his boyhood idols.

The Red Devils are also planning to dedicate a section to him in their museum marking the 253 goals for the club he scored in all competitions, which saw him overtake United legend Sir Bobby Charlton last season.

Rooney has had his troubles in recent weeks but he left United and boss Jose Mourinho on good terms and the club have always gone out of their way to welcome back returning heroes.

There are suggestions the 31-year-old could even become an official Manchester United ambassador when the former England forward eventually decides to hang up his boots, following in the footsteps of other club legends such as Peter Schmeichel and Bryan Robson.
