City sweat on Benjamin Mendy fitness

Manchester City's Benjamin Mendy will have a fitness test ahead of Tuesday's Champions League game with Shakhtar Donetsk at the Etihad.

The left-back limped off with a knee injury during the first-half of Saturday's 5-0 trouncing of Premier League basement side Crystal Palace.

City insiders claim the injury has settled down since the weekend and the France international is desperate to make the Champions League tie against the Ukrainians, who landed a shock victory over Napoli in the opening group game.

City boss Pep Guardiola, however, has Brazilian right-back Danilo on stand-by and he will not risk Mendy if he fails to convince the club's medical staff that he is now fully recovered from his knock.

Guardiola will also have one eye towards Saturday's huge top-of-the-table clash away to Chelsea, which is bound to also play a part in his overall thinking on Mendy.

Midfielder Fabian Delph and winger Leroy Sane have even been asked to fill in at left-back during the opening weeks of the season, highlighting a potential weakness in City's star-studded squad when Mendy is unavailable.

Meanwhile, Vincent Kompany will be missing once again as he continues to struggle to overcome the calf injury he suffered while on international duty this month.

Ilkay Gundogan will also miss out with the knee injury he picked up at West Brom last week, although City are hopeful he could be fit to face Chelsea.
