Michael Carrick sets out on new path

Michael Carrick has commenced taking his coaching badges ahead of hanging up his boots at the end of the season.

The Manchester United skipper accepted Jose Mourinho's offer to become part of his backroom staff when he retires from playing, with discussions now ongoing where the Red Devils' hierarchy initially see him fitting in.

There are suggestions the 36-year-old will have a rolling portfolio of duties which could see him dovetail between the first-team and the under-23 side.

Carrick underwent minor surgery prior to Christmas to treat an irregular heart rhythm and has used some of that recent downtime to start working towards his coaching diploma.

United feel they will be able to tap into the veteran midfielder's vast experience after spending 12 years at Old Trafford, with Jose Mourinho also identifying Carrick's real aptitude for the technical side of the game.
