The new system is currently optional but will become mandatory from June. Players who fail to verify their age risk losing access to a range of social and online features across the platform.
According to Sony, unverified users may be restricted from using voice and text chat, messaging, and third-party communication tools such as Discord. Broadcasting features — including streaming gameplay to platforms like YouTube and Twitch — could also be disabled.
In addition, certain in-game features tied to user-generated content, such as chat systems or content sharing tools, may no longer be accessible without verification.
Sony said: "Because each title is designed differently, the specific features affected may vary by game. As titles update their implementations over time, additional in-game features may become restricted for users who have not verified their age."
The company is using verification service Yoti, which allows users to confirm their age through a government-issued ID, facial age estimation, or a mobile network check.
Sony explained: "Age verification is a process that helps confirm you're old enough for an adult account for PlayStation in the UK and Ireland. We use an age verification service to help deliver an age-appropriate experience and support online safety."
Rival Microsoft has already implemented a similar system for Xbox users following the introduction of the legislation.
The move reflects a broader industry shift towards tighter regulation of online spaces, particularly around protecting younger players and moderating user-generated content.
