Developer brings Super Mario Bros to life with AR

A fan has bought the Super Mario Bros video game to life using augmented reality.

Developer Abhishek Singh has posted a video on YouTube showing him re-creating the much-loved video game in Central Park, New York, complete with the iconic green pipes coming out of the ground and the famous Goombas.

Captioning the video of him playing on the game, he wrote on YouTube: "Super Mario Bros meets Augmented Reality in this crazy life sized first person experience!

"I recreated the iconic first level, dressed up as Mario and then played it in Central Park (NYC). Built in Unity3D for the Microsoft Hololens. This video was recorded entirely through the hololens with no post production."

The augmented reality game - which uses the Microsoft Hololens - allows the user to jump up and knock the blocks above their head whilst there are also the Koopa Troopas, the tortoise-like creatures that are known as Super Mario's foes.

Singh told CNET: "While learning the absolute basics of HoloLens development, I literally placed a cube in a scene and for some reason jumped right under it, and that's when the idea of re-creating Mario struck me.

"I also had to model all the assets and elements of the game and rethink the experience from a real world 3D perspective. The most time was probably spent on tweaking the game to work in a large outdoor setting, something the HoloLens is not necessarily designed for."

Singh has no plans to bring the augmented reality game to the public because of copyright issues but he is considering making the code available to other DIY game makers if he can.

Meanwhile, Microsoft previously revealed the HoloLens allows people to "move freely and interact with holograms".

They wrote on their website: "Microsoft HoloLens is made up of specialised components that together enable holographic computing. The optical system that works in lock-step with advanced sensors. The HPU that makes light work of processing a large amount of data per second. All those components and more enable you to move freely and interact with holograms."
