The nausea caused by car sickness is when the brain perceives something different to what you can actually see so Uber are working on a system which helps to synchronise what you see and feel by implementing moveable seats, a special airflow and a light bar.
In the patent application, they wrote: "A sensory stimulation system for autonomous vehicles can determine a set of manoeuvres of the autonomous vehicle. Based on each respective manoeuvre, the sensory stimulation system can determine a set of visual stimulation outputs to provide a passenger of the autonomous vehicle with visual indications of the respective manoeuvre. The sensory stimulation system can then display the set of visual stimulation outputs on a display unit within the interior of the autonomous vehicle prior to executing each manoeuvre."
Uber also hope this will be able to "provide visual stimulation" on acceleration, braking or changing direction.
They added: "With the advent of autonomous vehicle technology, rider attention may be focused on alternative activities such as work, socialising, reading, writing, task based activities such as organisation, bill payments, online shopping, gameplay, and the like. As the autonomous vehicle travels along an inputted route, kinetosis (i.e. motion sickness) can result from the perception by a rider not corresponding to the rider's vestibular senses ...
"In many examples, the output devices can include visually perceptive devices, such as a light bar visible within the interior of the AV. The light bar can be included to circumscribe at least a portion of the interior passenger compartment and can provide visual stimulation based on each acceleration, braking or change of direction action performed by the autonomous vehicle."
