The island in Thailand has been revealed as the least expensive destination of all in the new 2020 Hotel Price Index, with an average room costing just $25. Delhi, India finds itself in second place with $29 and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia is in the third position with the average of $31 per room. Bali, Indonesia ($31) and Bangkok, Thailand ($37) completes the top five.
At the other end of the scale, Zurich, Switzerland is one of the most expensive destinations, with travellers expected to spend on average $216 a night. Los Angeles ($202) and New York ($197) sit at second and third respectively.
Dr. Ingo Burmester, CEO DER Touristik Central Europe, said: "Travel itself will be cheap in 2021. 80 percent of the price for package tours is determined by the cost of flights and hotels. Especially in destinations that are not in great demand, costs should fall. We will pass this on to our customers. We also stand in solidarity with all our partners in the travel industry in trying to make 2021 a year of recovery for everyone. Although it has been a challenging period, we have seen a great deal of interest in domestic travel. We also predict a major catch-up effect for Mediterranean destinations, European trips and long-haul routes in 2021 as soon as travel restrictions are lifted."
