Emma Raducanu starts hard-court season with a win

Emma Raducanu was pleased to start off the hard-court season with a comfortable victory.

The British number one defeated Louisa Chirico in straight sets at the Citi Open in Washington to begin the North American hard-court campaign in the right way.

The match was the first time Raducanu has played since losing in the second round of Wimbledon and she was pleased to get some time on court after an injury-hit spell.

She told reporters: “It definitely feels really good to get a win here in DC.

“After not playing for quite a bit after Wimbledon or many matches at all this year, I think it’s a really nice feeling just to get on the board.

“I think playing any first round is always pretty challenging. Then when you’re not necessarily that match-sharp, small things you don’t necessarily get right. It’s just important to stay calm.”

Raducanu has struggled since her historic victory at the US Open but is determined to manage expectations after winning a major title at the age of 18.

She explained: "I don't think anyone would say, 'I wish I didn't win a Grand Slam at 18' because that is what I set out to do when I started playing tennis - and I did that.

"For that to happen very soon definitely comes with a lot of challenges but managing, learning and growing through the adversities that I have faced - I would much rather have that, learn from those experiences and keep building and progressing."
