Andy Ruiz Jr. told to get back fighting by former trainer

Andy Ruiz Jr. has been urged to get back fighting by his former trainer Manny Robles.

The Mexican fighter caused a huge upset when he defeated Anthony Joshua to become heavyweight world champion in 2019 but he has boxed just twice since after losing the pair's rematch in Saudi Arabia six months later and Robles wants his former charge to get back amongst the action.

Robles told talkSPORT: "I think he would fight in this Saudi Arabia world title mix. But where is Andy? That is the question.

"I haven't spoken to him or seen him in years. I have no idea what Andy is up to in all honesty.

"But he should come back and take advantage of this opportunity that has been given to all the heavyweight fighters. The opportunity to fight in Saudi Arabia and get in the mix, all these great heavyweight champions fighting each other."

Robles doesn't think that Ruiz should be defined by his loss in the rematch - where he failed to prepare adequately following the joy of his world title win.

He said: "A loss should not determine the career of a fighter, I don't think he should be judged by that defeat.

"For someone like Deontay Wilder who lost his other fight, it looks like he might be fighting (Zhilei) Zhang."

Ruiz previously revealed that he wanted to take on Joshua in a trilogy fight after one win each in the first two bouts.

He said: "Before we retire, I would love to fight Anthony Joshua again.

"There has to be that trilogy, especially in the heavyweight division. Me and him, we have unfinished business."
