Chris Eubank Jr. shouldn’t face significant punishment for weight-cutting stunt, Eddie Hearn says

Eddie Hearn doesn’t think Chris Eubank Jr. should face significant punishment for using a sauna to shed weight for his Conor Benn fight.

The ‘Next Gen’ fighter, 35, is currently under investigation by the British Boxing Board of Control for using a sauna - which is currently banned - to lose weight for his match with ‘The Destroyer’, 28, on 26 April, though the 46-year-old boxing promoter has insisted Eubank Jr. should have to be punished too severly for his actions.

Hearn told talkSPORT: “I think, to be honest with you, the board, who I think do a great job, have got to look at the modern day methods that fighters use to make weight.

“Eubank’s obviously put everything out on social media about how he made the weight. I think one of those was using a sauna or sauna suit.

“[Now] he'll have to go in before the board. It's happened to me before about seven or eight years ago when I was referring to a fighter that we represented.”

In April, Eubank Jr. was fined £375,000 for fractionally exceeding the weight limit set for his fight against Benn, and the British Boxing Board of Control will now decide whether further disciplinary action should be taken after he documented his weight loss tactic on social media.

Even so, Hearn argued that regulations should change as the sport of boxing evolves.

He explained: “I think to be honest with you, you know, the board needs to get a little bit up to speed and start speaking to experts in the game, how to safely cut weight.

“You can't just be prehistoric and think that fighters don't cut weight. How do you think they're going to cut weight for a weigh-in?

“You know, there's kind of like a code where you're not allowed to talk about use of a sauna and you're not supposed to use a sauna or hot baths and stuff like that.

“But at the same time, they also know that fighters drop two, three, four, five pounds in the final 24 hours of a fight.”

Following Eubank Jr.’s victory against Benn in April, talks about a rematch have suggested the next fight will take place in September.
