Arne Slot feels that Florian Wirtz can replace Trent Alexander-Arnold's creativity at Liverpool

Arne Slot believes that Florian Wirtz's creative play can help Liverpool overcome the loss of Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The Reds played back-to-back pre-season games against Spanish side Athletic Bilbao on Monday (04.08.25) and the coach believes that the German international can bring a different type of creativity to the full-back - who has left Anfield for Real Madrid.

Slot said: "I think there is always room for improvement in every department and we have added a few, in my opinion, extra weapons.

"Florian has a lot of creativity in the final third and we have lost with Trent a lot of creativity from the back.

"Trent's crosses and picking out runners was so special - Flo has this quality in a totally different position. He brings that creativity."

Liverpool came out on top with an aggregate score of 7-3 in the matches and Slot was pleased with his team from both an attacking and defensive point of view.

He said: "I think in both games we created a lot of chances so that's very pleasing to see because we definitely didn't score every chance we had. That pleased me most, the ability to create the chances and even to score seven goals over two games is also good.

"The other games in pre-season, I think we've conceded a few chances too much. Today we hardly conceded anything at all, so that pleased me as well. But then to concede, especially in the second game, two set-piece goals, that's not what you want – especially if you play Crystal Palace (in the Community Shield) who are a team that are very strong on set-pieces.

"That's another thing to work on."
