The 62-year-old manager had headed up the Yellow Canaries for just over a year, though has been been let go after the team failed to qualify for the Champions League.
In a statement, the club said: “Our Professional Football First Team's technical director, Jose Mourinho, who has been carrying out his duties starting from the 2024-2025 season, has parted ways with us.
“We thank him for his efforts for our team until today and wish him success in his future career.”
Fenerbahce were defeated by Benfica 1-0 in their Champions League play-off tie on Wednesday (27.08.25), meaning the Turkish giants crashed out of the competition.
Following Fenerbahce’s loss, Mourinho admitted their opponents were “better” than them on the pitch.
He said in his post-match interview: “When we found out that we were going to play against Benfica, I was very clear and honest.
“I said that we will try our best [to qualify], and that is always part of my principles, because I gave each team a 50 per cent chance of winning.
“I said this as the leader of the group and in line with my soccer principles. However, we lost against a team that were better than us.
“They were stronger, and have more experience than us. It is a club that knows very well how to play these type of matches.
“Of course, we are sad that we did not qualify [for the Champions League]. But my conscience is clear, because we lost against a team that is better than us.”
Mourinho added Fenerbahce fans have a “mixed interest” in the club, and pointed to the long wait they have had to see the team lift a trophy - with Fenerbahce not having won the Turkish Super Lig since 2014.
Although Fenerbahce haven’t qualified for the Champions League, the team is now due to compete in the UEFA Europa League, which Mourinho thinks “suits [their] level better”.
In last season’s competition, Fenerbahce were knocked out of the round of 16 after losing on penalties to Rangers.
He continued: “Then, the reality is that the UEFA Europa League is a competition, which suits our level better.
“Last season, we played well in that copmpetition, and we were beaten on penalties after losing [to Rangers] in Glasgow. We were very close to reaching the final stages of that tournament, and we will try to do it this year.”
