United wait for cut-price Alderweireld deal

Man Utd hope to negotiate a cut-price deal for Toby Alderweireld this summer but may still have to pay over £50 million for the Spurs man.

The Belgium international's contract expires next summer and with no indication he will sign new terms, the centre-back continues to be heavily linked with a move away before the transfer window closes on August 9.

United are the frontrunners to sign him as boss Jose Mourinho looks for a top-class, Premier League-ready defender but have so far refused to meet Tottenham's asking price of £75 million.

However, the latest indications are that Spurs could be willing to listen to offers in the region of £50-60 million as they know Alderweireld could move on for free in 12 months' time.

The 29-year-old is currently with his country and will be involved in Saturday's third-place play-off against England at the World Cup in Russia before his focus will then switch to his club future.
