Apple ‘could bring Touch ID to Apple Watch’

Apple is reportedly experimenting with adding Touch ID to future Apple Watch models.

According to Macworld, internal developer code indicates Apple is moving toward on-wrist biometric authentication.

The outlet reports that the leaked code references “AppleMesa”, Apple’s longstanding internal codename for Touch ID.

The entries specifically point to prototype code for 2026 Apple Watch models, suggesting the technology is still in early development and not yet ready for public release.

It’s been claimed that none of the current or upcoming 2025 models contain Touch ID references, reinforcing expectations that any rollout of the feature is at least a year away.

Exactly where Apple might place the sensor remains unclear. Devices could potentially feature Touch ID under the display, on the side button, or even on the underside, as hinted by existing patents.

Importantly, the code is internal only, meaning that Apple has yet to confirm or commit to the feature.

While speculative, analysts note that integrating Touch ID onto the Apple Watch could significantly streamline authentication, reduce reliance on passcodes, and enhance security, especially for features like Apple Pay.

For now, support for Touch ID on the Apple Watch is said to be strictly in the prototype stage, with no guarantees that it will appear in future consumer models.

Still, the presence of “AppleMesa” in internal builds signals a serious exploration into bringing the trusted fingerprint sensor back - this time to Apple’s most compact wearable device.
