Meta is closing three VR gaming studios

Meta is shutting down three of its VR gaming studios as part of cuts.

The tech giant is making lay offs to around 10 percent of the Reality Labs metaverse division, which is impacting Twisted Pixel Games (Marvel's Deadpool VR), Sanzaru (Asgard's Wrath) and Armature Studio (Resident Evil 4 VR) as all three will be closed down.

A spokesperson for Meta told Bloomberg of the wider layoffs: “We said last month that we were shifting some of our investment from metaverse toward wearables.

“This is part of that effort, and we plan to reinvest the savings to support the growth of wearables this year.”

The outlet cited an internal memo confirming the developers were being closed down as part of the changes.

Meta spokesperson Tracy Clayton told The Verge that the reporting is accurate, while several former staff have posted online about their respective departures.

Former Twisted Pixel level designer Andy Gentile wrote: "I’ve just been laid off.

"It appears the entire Twisted Pixel Games studio has been shut down along with Sanzaru and Armature too."

His colleague Dan Greenfield - a senior artist for the studio - added: "Unfortunately, Twisted Pixel Games has been closed as a result of strategy changes at Meta."

Former Sanzaru staff also shared the news, with senior level designer Ray West confirming the closures.

He wrote: "As many will hear soon, several Meta game studios were closed today, including Sanzaru."

The developer's former lead environment artist Tyler Fluharty confirmed he's available, adding: "Due to an unexpected closure of Sanzaru Studios, I’m open for work."
