Now social media users can record and send messages on the service that previously only allowed photo and video posting functions.
Announcing the new direct message option on Twitter, Instagram wrote: "Talk the way you want to be heard, whether by whispering what you're up to or shouting a compliment."
All users have to do is simply open a thread and press down on the microphone icon to record a short message.
Once the button is released the voice recording will be sent.
It's also possible to delete the clip by sliding the icon to the trash bin.
The messages can be up to 60 seconds long, and unlike Instagram Stories - which are only available for 24 hours - they are permeant.
There is also the option to use the voice message function in a group chat as well as one-on-one.
