Sonos working on new smart speakers?

Sonos are reportedly making new smart speakers.

According to a new filing with the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the American consumer electronics company is working on a new model number S18 smart speaker, which will work as a satellite for the company's soundbars to create a surround sound system, and which will also include built-in microphones for far-field voice control.

The filing - which was first reported by Variety - refers to a new configuration of Sonos speakers, wherein the Playbar is the "master device," and the new S18 models are "wireless smart speakers" that can be used as left and right channels.

The new speakers were tested with the Sonos Playbar, the original sound bar made by the company in 2013, which does not have smart speaker capabilities, and so the new device is designed to add smart speaker functionality to the not-smart Sonos Playbar.

As of the time of writing, it's unknown when Sonos plans to officially reveal their plans for the S18 model of smart speaker, but the company recently claimed they would not be revealing any new products at next week's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.
