Australia's AI to catch dangerous drivers

Australia has launched new Artificial intelligence (AI) cameras, which can detect drivers using their mobiles illegally.

On Sunday (01.12.19) in New South Wales (NSW), the cameras were rolled out for the first time and it is hoped that they will lead to an increase in road safety.

Drivers who are caught will receive a letter of warning but could face a fine if they are spotted using their phones while driving again.

A trial in early 2019 successfully found 100,000 drivers using a mobile illegally.

Andrew Constance, minister for roads, said: "Some people have not got the message about using their phones legally and safely.

"If they think they can continue to put the safety of themselves, their passengers and the community at risk without consequence they are in for a rude shock."
