Staycations are popular

Staycations are becoming increasingly more popular due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Despite international travel slowly starting up, the future of travel still looks geared towards staying in your own town or country.

A 'The Future of Travel' study, conducted by Simon-Kucher & Partners, surveyed over 3,500 people across the United States and Europe about their post COVID-19 travel style and preferences.

Despite just under a third of people (30 per cent) wanting to travel as soon as they are able to, another 40 per cent of people would want to travel again if they feel the airline or travel provider had provided the necessary measures to allow them to feel safe.

And when it comes to where they'd like to travel, 38 per cent of travellers insisted they would use personal vehicles to make their trips, with 54 per cent of people saying they would take less trips in general.

Cruises saw the biggest hit, with nearly two thirds (62 per cent) of people insisting they wouldn't take as many of these type of holidays.

And it is those in the United States that are worried about travelling internationally, with 58 per cent of people wanting to travel domestically instead.

Wei Ke, partner and our US travel expert at Simon-Kucher & Partners, said: "The US has the highest number of COVID-19 cases and the situation is quite fluid in development with many states showing diverging trajectories. In addition, there is no clear timeline for the travel restrictions that the US and many countries around the world have put in place since March to be lifted, so it is not a complete surprise that Americans are reluctant to travel internationally. Clearly this will be terrible news for travel sectors that rely on international travel like airlines; however, it is more encouraging for domestic-focused businesses like theme and holiday parks, which can use the sentiment to their advantage and gain new customers who had not previously tried domestic proposition."
