With annual leave allowances refreshed at the start of the year, many Britons are planning trips built around movement and mental restoration rather than sun loungers.
Travel expert Jerry Rebbeck from Wheelwrights Holiday Cottages said he has seen the shift first hand.
Jerry Rebbeck said: "Holidays built around hikes and walks have become increasingly popular, and are set to be big in 2026. This is something we’re seeing first-hand with our own guests, with more people asking for itineraries built around walking routes or planning their trips around hikes in the first place. That shift is reflected in Google searches too, with searches for the term ‘hiking holidays’ up 63% since January 2021, and up 23% from January 2025."
Social media trends echo that demand, with the hashtag #hikersoftiktok generating more than 2,000 UK posts in the past three months and rising by 165 per cent during that period.
Jerry added said: "Holiday goers are prioritising mentally restorative trips in 2026, seeking out holidays which will reduce stress and revitalise energy in an active way. Hiking is great for your mental health by combining physical exercise, time away from screens, and immersion in nature, all proven to help boost positive brain chemicals and reduce stress. It’s no wonder more Brits are turning to hiking holidays to properly disconnect from the digital world and return home feeling mentally refreshed."
The UK is proving a natural choice for walkers, thanks to its 15 national parks and varied terrain.
Jerry noted: "We are extremely lucky in the UK that we have 15 national parks, which serve as gorgeous backdrops for hiking holidays. From mountain routes to gentle riverside ambles, and countryside paths to forest trails, there is something for every type of walker."
The Lake District remains a firm favourite among guests, offering routes for all abilities and repeat visitors year after year.
Offering advice to those considering a walking break, he stressed the importance of preparation.
He said: "Before you book your hiking holiday, think carefully about where your accommodation is located.
"Hiking is great fun and incredible for both your mental and physical fitness, but being prepared is essential. Always make sure to plan routes carefully and carry safety equipment such as torches, first aid kits, flares, and compasses. Ensure you are dressed appropriately for the conditions, and allow enough daylight to complete your hike safely. With all that in place, you will have peace of mind to have an enjoyable and relaxing time hiking the day away."
