Aircraft refuellers at Gatwick Airport to stage two four-day strikes

Aircraft refuellers at Gatwick Airport have voted to strike this May.

Unite union members working for Redline Oil have announced plans to stage four-day walks between May 16 to May 20 and May 23 to 27.

This will lead to delays and cancellations, including during the start of the May half term.

It comes after they rejected a 3.5% pay increase over two years.

More than 100 Unite members employed by Red Handling - including baggage handlers, check-in staff and flight dispatchers - are already planning to strike at the same time.

The first strike will take place on May 11, then May 18, 25 and June 2.

It follows a strike over the Easter break.

The union’s regional officer David Taylor said: "We appreciate that delays and cancellations are very frustrating for those looking to travel, especially during the half term holidays but this is a dispute entirely of Red Handling and Redline’s own making.

“We urge them both to come back to the table for negotiations.”

A Gatwick spokesperson insisted they will work to "minimise impacts to passengers".

They said: “We are aware of the proposed industrial action from Red Handling and Redline Oil, and are working closely with both parties, and our airlines, to minimise impacts to passengers.

“Of course, we hope Red Handling, Redline Oil and their unions can reach a resolution before then.”
