Europe is top travel destination for Americans

Europe has been named the top travel destination for Americans.

US residents are looking to countries like France, Spain and Italy for their holidays in 2018, firming the continent's place as the top destination for Americans to visit.

The Travelzoo Winter Travel Trends Survey found that Italy, Ireland, France, Iceland and the United Kingdom took up half of the top 10 spots for vacation plans for US citizens in 2018.

It was the United Kingdom though that saw the biggest increase in interest, going from tenth place last year up to fifth place this year whilst France only moved up one spot and Iceland moved into the top 10 for the first time. Travelzoo's customers' searches for France and Italy were up more than 50% in 2017.

Travelzoo also found that there was an increase in the amount of people who wanted to take more than one vacation a year, with a 56 percent year-over-year increase in the number of travellers who are planning two or more international vacations. Two-thirds of those who completed the survey also said they wanted to take a "bucket list" trip in 2018.

Travelzoo's North American president Michael Stitt said: "Low-cost carriers like Wow Air and Norwegian helped make Europe more affordable and accessible again for Americans. A weekend trip to Iceland is now as easy as a weekend in Austin. And major airports like JFK are no longer a choke point. There are now plenty of non-stops from cities like Hartford and Pittsburgh, opening up access and increasing competition, which is always appealing for travelers. Transatlantic is the new transcontinental."
