Eiffel Tower, Paris is one of most Instagrammed places in the world

The Eiffel Tower is one of the most Instagrammed places in the world.

The Paris landmark has come out on top as the most photographed place in France in the InterContinental Hotels & Resorts' InterContinental ICons Research Study.

The famous building featured in 53 per cent of all photos with the hashtag #Paris whilst 44 per cent of all photos under #Shanghai feature The Bund. In Dubai, the famous Burj Khalifa was in 36 per cent of all photos whilst the Sydney Opera House featured in over a third (35 per cent) of photos with the hashtag #Sydney. A quarter (25 per cent) of all posts with the hashtag #MexicoCity are of the Pyramid de Teotihuacan whilst in London, 21 per cent of all posts featured Buckingham Palace.

More generally, the study found that travellers are posting the same pictures in the same locations, rather than travelling off the beaten path. Instagram also plays a heavy part in travelling, with people taking to social media to show off their adventures.

The study also revealed the top five most Instagrammed sites in New York City were Central Park (20 per cent), Times Square, Brooklyn Bridge, the Statue of Liberty and Rockefeller Center / Top of the Rock. Times Square was named the most overexposed sight in New York City with 76 per cent selecting it as the top choice.
