Joe Denly not planning to retire

Joe Denly has no plans to retire.

The 39-year-old batsman is in his 22nd year as a professional cricketer and while his season has been hindered by a broken arm, he isn’t quite ready to give up just yet as he still thinks he has a lot to offer Kent.

He told Wisden Cricket Monthly: “I’m 39 years old but I still feel like I’m batting nicely and it’s just a case of trying to stay fit.

“I’ve been unlucky this year with the broken arm but as long as I’m still batting well and contributing, then hopefully I’ll play for a little while longer.”

Joe is turning out alongside his nephew Jaydn at Kent and is enjoying seeing how his relative’s game has developed.

He said: “I remember babysitting Jaydn when he was a toddler.

“He’s certainly developed as a cricketer over the last couple of years.

“As a left-handed bat, left-arm spin bowler and very good fielder, he’s potentially got a really exciting future.

“He’s found himself opening the batting in the four-day team, which will be great for his development.

“Hopefully we can play a lot more cricket together.”
