Legoland California to open new Lego Galaxy land with first rollercoaster in 20 years

Legoland California have unveilved plans for Lego Galaxy, a new outer-space-themed land featuring the park’s first new rollercoaster in two decades.

The expansion, scheduled to open in early 2026, is part of a $90 million investment by parent company Merlin Entertainments across its California and Florida resorts.

The new area will feature multiple rides, themed dining and retail experiences, and a “galactic” design inspired by classic Lego space sets.

Julie Estrada, North America communications director for Merlin Entertainments, said: "Lego Galaxy is taking the DNA of Lego past, present and future and launching it into a whole new land. It means multiple attractions that are going to be space-themed, including food and beverage outlets, including retail, including the addition of a couple of new rides."

The centrepiece will be Galacticoaster, designed as a child's "first rollercoaster experience".

Estrada said: "Galacticoaster is going to be more than our typical ‘pink knuckle’ roller coaster. You’re not squeezing so tight that you’re scared and terrified and you don’t want to ride again. You’re just excited and thrilled. It’s designed to be a child’s first rollercoaster experience."

She added that the new ride will include technology never before used at the park.

Estrada said: "We have to grow with everything that’s changing and moving with the world. Galacticoaster’s going to be a little bit more, I don’t want to use the word intense, but I’m going to say more, more thrilling."

The coaster will also include a dark ride section, increasing immersion.

Estrada said: "Whenever it’s inside, it’s a little bit more intense in nature because you’re just so enthralled in the ride. Everything is right there in your face and you’re experiencing everything, you’re touching all your senses."

A second attraction for younger children and a toddler play zone will also form part of the new area.

To celebrate the launch, Merlin has unveiled a Junior Galaxy Explorer Contest, inviting children aged six to twelve to design their own Lego spaceships. Winners will receive annual passes and be among the first to ride Galacticoaster when Lego Galaxy opens.
