The new venue, Woolwich Waves, will open next month opposite General Gordon Square and promises a major upgrade for families, fitness fans and swimmers across the borough.
Woolwich Waves is set to feature two swimming pools, water slides, a splash zone, a two-floor gym, sports halls, squash courts, soft play and a sauna.
Costing £115 million to build, the leisure centre forms a central part of Woolwich’s wider regeneration plans and aims to become a year-round destination for active fun and community wellbeing.
The new opening arrives as the long-serving Waterfront Leisure Centre faces an uncertain future.
First opened in 1988, the facility has suffered from years of wear and tear, with some areas reportedly affected by black mould and several water slides closed indefinitely.
A council decision on whether the building will be demolished is expected on November 19, with Berkeley Homes already earmarked as a potential developer for the site.
Greenwich Councillor Majid Rahman, Cabinet Member for Planning, Estate Renewal and Development, said: "The regeneration of Woolwich remains a key priority for the council and Woolwich Waves sits at the heart of that."
Cllr Rahman added: “Subject to approval by Cabinet, it is recommended that the old Waterfront Leisure Centre building is demolished, when it becomes vacant, to avoid anti-social behaviour and associated security costs …
"The repurposing of the Waterfront site would pave the way for more much-needed housing and contribute to the council’s and the Mayor of London’s affordable housing targets.”
The news follows a difficult year for public leisure facilities in the UK. Earlier in 2024, two popular centres in Lincolnshire - Yarborough and Birchwood - closed suddenly due to rising utility costs.
Staff and customers expressed shock and concern, with some members unsure about refunds for prepaid fees.
As Woolwich prepares to welcome its newest attraction, the arrival of Woolwich Waves represents not only fresh investment but also a vital boost to local leisure services at a time when many communities are facing closures.
