Australia may not receive tourists until next year

Australia may not receive tourists until next year.

The country's tourism minister has insisted it may be possible that outside visitors - who are coming into the country for leisure purposes - may not be able to return to Oz until 2021.

Senator Simon Birmingham told the National Press Club: "I do sadly think that in terms of open tourist-related travel in or out of Australia, that remains quite some distance off. Just because of the practicalities of the volumes that are involved and the need for us to first and foremost keep putting health first."

And when pressed if that could mean the borders may not be open until 2021, he added: "I think that is more likely the case."

His comments come after Australia hosted their first virtual travel weekend, by hosting a special event, which includes live entertainment, to show off the best the country has to offer.

The weekend, titled 'Live From Aus', began with a masterclass on how to prepare a Bondi brekkie bowl with top chef Guy Turland, before viewers were treated to a very special look at the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park with Citizens of the GBR. From there, they could marvel at Uluru at sunset, with music curated by Sounds Australia. There was also a crocodile encounter with Matt Wright, an Aussie brunch with Three Blue Ducks and a wildlife question and answer session with zookeeper Chad Staples.
