The 35-year-old sportsman was among the first wave of professionals to move to the tour in 2022 and while playing high-level fellow golfers appealed, he couldn’t turn down the huge pay cheques on offer.
He told Golf Monthly magazine: “My motivations to move to LIV were the opportunity in terms of the money that we were playing for and, to an extent, some of the other players who were playing in those fields.
“They just got better and better, but being able to play for $20-$25 mullion for that first year was just such a big financial opportunity for someone like me.
“I had a young family and all those sorts of things.
“So, that was my main consideration to be honest.”
Laurie lost his LIV roster spot for the 2024 season and has returned to the DP World Tour.
Playing his first Players Championship in March and the tournament “completely blew [his] mind”.
He said: “It completely blew my mind. My caddie and I played it on the Sunday or Monday on our own and it was amazing.
“We both kind of laughed at how good the set-up was. I’d never been there – I’d just watched it on the telly – but I loved the layout and the course.
“I think any time you get to go and play events of that stature, you have to try and take it in a little bit because they’re different. They’re pretty special.”
